Candyce Curry has been an educator in the Birmingham, Alabama area for over 18 years. Most notably, she was an Advanced Sciences teacher for freshmen, junior and senior scholars at Huffman High School, where she was awarded the Teacher of the Year Award for two consecutive years. She is a graduate of Stillman College (Tuscaloosa, AL) and Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (Normal, AL) with degrees in Biology and Biology Education, respectively.  During her tenure in the Birmingham City Schools (BCS) system, Candyce has served in numerous leadership roles, including Alabama Continuous Improvement Plan Coordinator, Title One Co-coordinator, District Science Curriculum Writing Team, Instructional Leadership Team, Social Emotional Learning Coordinator, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Coordinator, Assistant Athletic Director and most fondly, Botany Club Sponsor. Huffman High’s Botany Club participated in the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and the Alabama Bicentennial Plant Barcoding Project. They successfully discovered several plants and barcoded them in the company databases. She has also participated in the HudsonAlpha Genetic Technologies for All Classrooms (GTAC) program.  As a consummate professional educator, Candyce has discovered that science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is an integral portion of a person’s understanding of everyday life and can address many educational deficiencies. In her role as an Instructional Coach, Candyce aims to complement and enhance instruction with “C.L.A.S.S.” (Creative/Cooperative/Committed, Learning, (that is) Appropriate/Accessible, Strategic and Sensational.) She fervently applies the integration of technology, in order to make student learning more authentic which can lead to diversity of learning for individual proficiency. Candyce firmly believes that intentional application of educational technology in all content areas is an integral piece of the puzzle that levels the platform for all learners. Her future aspirations include working closely with STEM-based policymakers and stakeholders, in order to effect continued growth and change from a broader educational platform.
