Three dimensional simulation of the merger of two neutron stars in a binary system. Such systems have recently been implicated in the generation of a class of gamma-ray bursts called short-hard bursts. Careful simulation and analysis suggest that their ejecta are also rich in the nuclei produced in the rapid neutron-capture process. Courtesy of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics.
