About

The Office of Scientific Workforce Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (SW-DEI) was established to lead the DOE Office of Science (SC) initiatives to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) in how SC manages its over $8 billion annual funding for competitive extramural research and scientific user facilities, and advances DEI within the 10 DOE National Laboratories it stewards. Broadly, SW-DEI is responsible for:

  • Developing and coordinating SC-specific policies, plans, and procedures focused on advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in SC-sponsored extramural research programs and facilities.
  • Advancing organizational best practices for promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in SC business practices and at the SC National Laboratories.

The SW-DEI office (formerly called the Office of Diversity, Inclusion & Research Integrity) was established in 2020 to create a home for several Office of Science DEIA initiatives that began over the previous decade. Activities described under Advancing DEI for the SC Mission, including Advancing DEI in SC Business Practices and Advancing DEI at the DOE National Laboratories, represent the initiatives that began prior to the establishment of SW-DEI and continue under the new office.

SW-DEI collaborates across the Office of Science to build on existing efforts and works directly with SC’s leadership and management to identify new opportunities grounded in evidence-based best practices to further the SC mission by advancing DEIA in how it does business and engages the broader scientific community. SW-DEI also coordinates with other parts of the Department of Energy and at the interagency level to support Department DEIA goals and objectives.

Resources and DEI initiatives to support the DOE and SC Federal workforce are managed by the SC Office of Equal Employment Opportunity, Diversity & Inclusion Programs, and the DOE Office of Economic Impact and Diversity.
